Postpartum Alopecia

Causes:

  • Hormonal fluctuations: After giving birth, levels of estrogen and progesterone drop significantly, which can lead to hair follicles entering a resting phase.

  • Increased hair shedding: This resting phase results in an increased number of hairs being shed simultaneously.

Symptoms:

  • Excessive hair loss, often in clumps

  • Thinning hair

  • Scalp may feel tender or itchy

Onset and Duration:

Postpartum alopecia usually begins 2-5 months after giving birth and peaks around 4-6 months. It typically lasts for 6-12 months, but may resolve sooner or later in some women.
