Common Types of Alopecia
Areata and Hair Loss
Alopecia Areata
An autoimmune disorder causing hair to
fall out in small, round patches. You might
identify it by looking for sudden, patchy hair
loss on the scalp or other body areas.
Androgenetic Alopecia
Commonly known as male-pattern or
female-pattern baldness, influenced by
genetics and hormones. You might
identify it by noticing gradual thinning
at the crown or a receding hairline.
Alopecia Totalis
A more advanced form of alopecia areata
that results in the complete loss of all hair
on the scalp. It can develop suddenly or
progress from alopecia areata. You might
identify it by observing complete hair
loss on the scalp, often accompanied by
changes in nail texture or appearance.
Alopecia Barbae
A form of alopecia areata that specifically
affects the beard area in men, causing patchy
hair loss. It can start with small, round
bald patches that may gradually spread.
You might identify it by checking for
these bald patches in the beard area.
Alopecia Universalis
The most severe form of alopecia areata,
resulting in the complete loss of hair on
the scalp and body, including eyebrows and
eyelashes. It is often sudden and can be
emotionally distressing. You might
identify it by looking for complete
hair loss across the entire body.
Cicatricial Alopecia
Scarring alopecia involving permanent hair
loss due to follicle inflammation and scarring.
You might identify it by noticing hair loss with
signs of scalp inflammation or scarring.
Traction Alopecia
Hair loss from prolonged tension or pulling,
often due to certain hairstyles. You might
identify it by looking for hair thinning or
breakage, especially around the hairline.
Trichotillomania
A psychological disorder characterized by the
compulsive urge to pull out one's hair.
You might identify it by checking for
uneven hair loss or short, broken hairs.
Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia

women, causing hair loss along the front
hairline. You might identify it by observing a
receding hairline and possible eyebrow thinning.
